Montauk Animal of the Month: White Tailed Deer

If you live in Montauk, I'm sure you've seen at least a few white-tailed deer. These cute creatures are sometimes considered annoying, especially to drivers, as they pose a large threat on the roads.

Why do we have so many deer?

Montauk's deer have no natural predators.  Due to Montauk's lack of larger predators (Coyotes, Bears, etc.) Deers don't have any animals that use them as a food source. This means they have no population control, leading to large deer populations. Hunters help keep the number of deers at bay.

What are the benefits of Deer?

Despite what some think, Deer are an important part of Montauk's ecosystem. They help spread seeds as they travel through forests and provide food for scavengers after they die naturally.

Deer Facts

  1.  Diet: Leaves, grass, acorns, berries, and twigs

  2. Top Speed: Up to 30 mph

  3. Jump Height: Up to 8 feet

  4. Baby Name: Fawn

  5. Special Feature: Their white tail warns other deer of danger.
